A spokesman for the Italian firefighters’ service said on Sunday that a migrant boat shipwreck in southern Italy has resulted in more than 30 deaths and that more than 40 people have survived.
Near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Calabria, the region that makes up the tip of Italy’s boot, the ship went down.
Danilo Maida, a spokesperson for the Calabrian firefighters’ service, told Reuters that the death toll has surpassed 30, but the count was only provisional.
He added that the harsh conditions made the search for additional survivors at sea using jet skis difficult for firefighters and other emergency services.
