Karuma Closure Extended: Another Month of Delays

The Karuma Bridge, a crucial transport link for northern Uganda and the West Nile region, has been temporarily closed once again, causing major disruptions.

For nearly a year, frequent and unannounced closures have significantly impacted businesses and the transport sector.

The Ministry of Works announced the latest shutdown via its X (formerly Twitter) account, citing ongoing rehabilitation works, specifically the installation of expansion joints on the Gulu Highway.

To mitigate the inconvenience, the Ministry assured the public that alternative routes, including the newly repaired Masindi Port ferries, would be available to handle diverted traffic.

However, business owners along the Gulu-Kampala highway have voiced their frustration, arguing that these temporary measures fail to address the long-term impact.

Many fear substantial financial losses due to decreased customer traffic. “We are going to struggle to pay rent and clear loans because travelers will no longer pass through,” said Michael Kayondo, a businessman in Kigumba.

The diversion of traffic to longer routes through Apac, Murchison Falls, and Lira will increase transport costs, driving up prices for both goods and services.

Transporters, too, are frustrated by the lack of prior notice and the rising operational expenses, with fuel consumption soaring and fares expected to rise.

This marks the third closure of the Karuma Bridge, underscoring ongoing infrastructure challenges and the urgent need for a lasting solution to prevent further disruptions affecting businesses and transport.
