Bobi Wine’s Nephew Ssentamu Sworn In as Makerere University Guild President

James Churchill Ssentamu has officially taken the oath as the 91st Guild President of Makerere University.

Running as an independent candidate, Ssentamu triumphed over John Bosco Rukundo of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Ismaili Basalirwa, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer. Despite being a nephew of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), Ssentamu contested independently after failing to secure the party’s endorsement in the primaries.

He takes over from Vincent Lubega Nsamba at a time when the university is grappling with key issues such as rising tuition fees, allegations of administrative intolerance, and concerns over students’ academic freedom and freedom of expression.

In his inaugural address, Ssentamu pledged to tackle these challenges along with the promises made during his campaign. Meanwhile, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza, who represented the Vice Chancellor, urged the new student leadership to foster consensus on critical matters affecting the student body.
