Police Officer Arrested for Shooting Dead 18-Year-Old Student in Kaliro

Police in Kaliro District have detained one of their officers for allegedly shooting and killing 18-year-old student Mudago Sogo.

Busoga Region Police Spokesperson, Mr. Michael Kasadha, stated that the incident occurred following a theft report by Mutebi Godfrey, a resident of Kananzoki village, who claimed his three bulls had been stolen on March 8, 2025.

A police tracking dog traced the scent to a nearby bar, leading officers to Zigondo Bosco Pande, a known theft suspect. However, as police attempted to arrest him, an angry mob gathered, hurling stones at the officers and trying to attack the suspect.

Amid the escalating chaos, a violent confrontation ensued, during which Sgt. Kyakwise discharged his firearm, fatally shooting Sogo.

Police managed to rescue Zigondo Bosco Pande and took him to Kaliro Police Station for further questioning. Meanwhile, Sogo, who sustained critical injuries, died while being transported to the hospital. His body was later moved to Bumanya Health Centre IV for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the shooting and whether the use of force was warranted. Sgt. Kyakwise remains in custody at Kaliro Police Station as inquiries continue.

Mr. Kasadha urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
