Police Constable Arrested for Stabbing Boda Boda Rider

In Kitgum District, Northern Uganda, a police constable has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a 24-year-old boda-boda rider, Sam Akena.

It is reported that Constable Emmanuel Ocan, 24 used his gun’s bayonet to injure Akena on the left side of the eye at a traffic checkpoint near Pager Bridge in Kitgum Municipality.

Eyewitness Anthony Nyero, who reported the incident to the police, said Constable Ocan’s actions were unprovoked.

However Acting Aswa East Police Spokesperson Joe Oloya explained that the victim Akena was on his way to Kitgum General Hospital with two passengers when he was stopped by traffic officers.

After being cleared to go, Constable Ocan and another officer, Okot, stopped them again which led to the altercation.

“The rider was then led to CPS Kitgum, where he lodged a case of assault,” Oloya said. Akena has been issued a Police Form 3 for a medical examination, and the results are pending.

The incident sparked resistance from local residents, who almost resorted to mob action against the police officer. However, Kitgum District Chairperson Christopher Obol Arwai intervened, and the situation was brought under control.

Spokesperson Oloya has urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is being handled. He also emphasised the need for police officers to exhibit maximum professionalism in their work.

Akena is currently receiving treatment at Kitgum General Hospital.
