At least three people lost their lives, and four others were injured in a fatal road accident in Kabale District over the weekend.
The incident occurred on January 25 at around 8:00 a.m. in Mushenyi B Village, along the Bigaaga-Katojo Village access road in Ndorwa West County, according to police.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate reported that the accident involved a grey Toyota Corolla driven by 30-year-old Isaac Tumukunde, a resident of Kinyame Village in Kahunge Sub-county, Ndorwa West County.
The victims who lost their lives were identified as Loyce Nanteza (37), Oliver Bagarukene (48), and Kate Ninsiima (43), all peasants from Kinyame Village.
The injured include Ben Byaruhanga (51) and Moses Ashakimana (55), both primary school teachers, Ismael Tumukunde, a Primary Three pupil at Katojo Primary School, and Abraham Akampurira (18). All reside in Kahunge Sub-county.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver veered off the road while traveling from Bigaaga towards Katojo, causing the vehicle to overturn down a steep slope and land in gardens. The driver reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene.
Residents retrieved the bodies of the deceased and transported them to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary, while the injured were rushed to the same hospital for medical attention.
Cpl Mugabo Christopher visited the scene, sketched a map, and noted that the vehicle remains at the site pending removal. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
Police records indicate that road accidents and murders accounted for an average of 25 daily deaths in Uganda by the end of 2023.
