Parliament has tasked the government through the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development to explain circumstances under which billions of shillings of taxpayer money were stolen. This comes after the government and its agencies have skirted around the rather contentious issue.

“I had even seen media reports about this, and it affects us in every sense. I thought the government, through the ministry of finance, should help us understand because you supervise the operations of the Bank of Uganda. It is important that we know what is happening at the central bank. If monies are being siphoned, whether by hackers or staff of the Bank of Uganda, it should worry all of us.” Joel Senyonyi, the Leader of Opposition, reiterated.

Junior Finance Minister Musasizi Henry retorted, saying, “I wish to state that it is true our accounts were hacked into, but not to the extent that is being reported.”

“I want to appreciate the minister; rarely do they concede to some of these… Nearly every two months, you’ll hear a heist at a commercial bank. Commercial banks are privately owned, and it bothers, but when it comes to the central bank, it is more problematic.” Senyonyi noted.

The Bank of Uganda is yet to issue a statement, even after saying it would earlier this week.
